The African Mathematical Union Commission on Women in Mathematics in Africa (AMUCWMA) and the African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA) in collaboration with the International University of Rabat (IUR) are jointly pleased to announce the AMUCWMA - AWMA Workshop 2017 (W-PACOM 2017) to be held in Rabat, Morocco on 6 and 7 July 2017. This Workshop will be part of the 9th Pan African Congress of Mathematicians (PACOM 2017) to be held in Rabat, Morocco from 3 to 7 July 2017, as a Satellite Conference. The Workshop will be based on the theme:” Women in Mathematics for the social development of Africa”. The AWMA General Assembly will be held on July 7, 2017.

The AWMA General Assembly will be held on July 6, 2017.

This workshop follows a series of workshops, the first one was held at the University of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), 26th – 27th October 2012, the second one was held at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), Cape Town, (South Africa), 17th – 19th of July 2013, and the third one was held in Naivasha, Kenya, 16th – 18th of July 2015.

The AMU Commission on Women and Mathematics in Africa (AMUCWMA) has been created during the Second Pan African Congress of Mathematicians held in Jose (Nigeria) in 1986 with objectives:

  • To generate activities and programs meant to encourage women to study and make careers in the Mathematical sciences;
  • To mobilise young girls all over the continent to show more interest in Mathematics;
  • To prepare and update from time to time a directory of Women in Mathematics all over the continent;
  • To commission studies on various topical issues on Women in Mathematics in Africa;
  • To organise seminars, workshops, symposia etc.., to discuss, analyse and find solutions to the problems confronting Women in Mathematics in Africa;
  • To cooperate with other organizations with similar objectives.
Since 2012, AMUCWMA is organizing, in collaboration with CIMPA, on the framework of the CIMPA- Research schools workshops on Women and Mathematics in Africa, aiming to create an opportunity of regular meetings between African women mathematicians and to promote and increase the participation of women and girls in mathematics CIMPA-schools organized in Africa. Three workshops have been organized at present: in 2012 at University of Ouagadougou 1, Burkina Faso; in 2013 at AIMS Muizenberg, South Africa, in 2015 at Naivasha, Kenya. It is to emphasize that the Naivasha Workshop has been organized jointly with the association “African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA).

The African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA) has been created in July 2013 during the AMUCWMA workshop held in Muizenberg, South Africa. AWMA has organized its first workshop in July 2015 at Naivasha (Kenya) jointly with the AMUCWMA. Fore more details concerning AWMA, please visit the AWMA website:
