Pan African Congress of Mathematicians 2017

Revisited on March 2016

Welcome message from Professor Nouzha El Yacoubi, Chair and Convener of the PACOM 2017 Local Organizing Committee

On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee of the 9th edition of the Pan African Congress Of Mathematicians (PACOM 2017), I am truly happy to welcome our colleagues from Africa and from around the world to this Congress. It will be a good opportunity for all, to discover that Morocco is in a perpetual growth in various fields.

Let me start by emphasizing that the Moroccan mathematical community, is proud that Morocco has been chosen Forty one (41) years ago to host the First Pan African Congress of Mathematicians, held in the Faculty of Sciences, Mohammed V University, in Rabat, under the High Patronage of His Majesty Hassan II.

That Congress has been a successful achievement of many meetings held since 1970, by the African Mathematicians, whom were conscious of the important role of Mathematics for sciences and their applications in the development of Africa. They seized the opportunity of that first Pan African Congress to create the African Mathematical Union (AMU). It is important to outline that the input, encouragement and support of several African States Heads were determinant for such meaningful action.

From 3 to 7 July 2017, Mohammed V University will host the 9th edition of the Pan African Congress of Mathematicians (PACOM 2017) in the same venue, namely the Faculty of Sciences. The Moroccan mathematical community is delighted at the opportunity we have been given to host for the third time a PACOM, since Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco, has hosted the 4th edition of PACOM in 1995.

The item of PACOM 2017 “Mathematics at the heart of technological innovation and economic development of Africa” has been motivated by the fact that Africa is currently striving to achieve the much-needed socio-economic growth via innovations in Science and Technology, and of course Mathematics are at the heart of Science and technology!

For the first time, the Local Organizing Committee of a PACOM has adopted the principal to host Satellite Conferences that will cover relevant subjects like: “Mathematics as a evolving technology”; African Women in Mathematics for social development of Africa”; and “Mathematics teachers professional development in Africa”.

Also, ensuring a scientific level of a high standard was a priority of the PACOM 2017 Local Organizing Committee, and its members were lucky to succeed to get such large Scientific Committee with so many outstanding mathematicians from and outside Africa, where woman mathematicians are quite, even well, represented. Thanks to all of them for having accepted our invitation and committed them selves to contribute in setting up a scientific program of a good quality.

I Would like here to thank sincerely the African Mathematical Union Council members for their confidence and for the assistance and support that would be provided at the various stages of the preparation of PACOM 2017.

I am pleased to emphasize that the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Mohammed V University, the Hassan II Academy of Sciences and Technology, other universities and several Moroccan prominent organizations, have acknowledged the hosting of PACOM 2017 with a great satisfaction and deep determination to support this important event and let it be a real success. We are convinced that working together with many faces of our society during the preparations of the Congress will help to open a new era of expanded roles of mathematics in this 21st century not just for our country but for our continent Africa.

I hope that you will enjoy the scientific program of the congress, the Moroccan goodies and the beautiful historical sites of RABAT that has been ranked in 2012 as “the UNESCO World Heritage of Humanity ”

See you in Rabat!
